Technology Drives SDI Columbus

A message from Madhu G. Ranade
VP & GM Columbus Division

Welcome to the Columbus Division, part of Steel Dynamics’ Flat Roll Group, located in Columbus, Mississippi. We are known for our high-tech electric arc furnaces (EAFs) and high-end finishing capabilities. We’re proud of the fact that we are the most technologically advanced EAF facility in North America.

We believe there are many aspects that make the Columbus Division special. As the most advanced mini-mill in North America, we have the capability to provide a wide range of products to meet your most demanding requirements. We provide outstanding quality, on-time delivery and strong technical service for our customers. We encourage you to click on our products page to discover all we offer.

The Columbus facility produces a broad range of products for the manufacturing sector in the U.S. and Mexico, including ultra high-strength steel, advanced metallic coatings, and the widest painted products available today. These products find their way into the most demanding markets, including automobile, energy, appliance, construction, and much more. We work closely with our customers to develop products that fit individual applications and our manufacturing capability. When a customer comes to us with a specific need that we don’t currently offer, we don't say, “We can’t do that.” We put our heads together and figure out a way to meet their needs with a unique solution that is mutually beneficial.

At every SDI facility, safety is the highest priority. One of the most profound safety messages I’ve heard from SDI is that the best ton of steel is a safely produced ton of steel. The idea that nothing comes before safety is one we embrace wholeheartedly here at SDI Columbus. That’s because we believe our employees are the greatest asset. They have an amazing work ethic and are always excited to learn. By offering incentives and opportunities for advancement, SDI encourages and rewards highly engaged employees who know they can share in the company’s overall success.

All of our employees know they have a voice. Everyone is encouraged to share their ideas about improving safety, process, equipment design, or engineering as part of our “Idea Factory.” This activity plays a key role in our ability to exceed our customers’ expectations. We also conduct routine cross-audits of our processes from outside sources, including team members from other SDI facilities. We believe this fresh perspective on our process and procedure can help bring about positive changes that we may have not considered.

Another unique aspect to our Columbus facility is that we have seven scrapyards as part of our operation. This ensures a steady supply of quality scrap without worry about sourcing a significant portion of our scrap requirements. It also enables our scrap yards to focus on efficiencies because they know they have a consistent customer.

Thank you for taking the time to get to know us a bit better. We are proud of our facility, our employees and our capabilities. We invite you to spend a few minutes discovering more about the Columbus Division.

Sincerely,
Madhu G. Ranade
