SDI joins FORTUNE 500

Steel Dynamics has joined the FORTUNE 500, the esteemed list of America's top companies. SDI ranks 318th on FORTUNE's annual list for 2009, which can be seen online here.

The 2009 FORTUNE 500 ranks public companies based on 2008 revenues. With revenues of $8.1 billion in 2008, SDI jumped 199 spots to No. 318. The company was ranked 517th last year.

FORTUNE also lists SDI as the fourth-largest American-owned steel company and No. 5 in the metals industry.


  • Among all FORTUNE 500 companies, SDI was No. 15 in profit growth over the last five years (57.6 percent) and No. 10 over the last decade (30.8 percent). The company ranked No. 10 in earnings per share from 1998 to 2008 and No. 33 in total return to investors over the last 10 years.
  • Among all FORTUNE 500 companies, SDI recorded 84.3 percent revenue growth between 2007 and 2008 to rank No. 6. SDI ranked third over the last five years (52.3 percent).
  • In the metals sector, SDI was No. 1 in earnings-per-share growth annually from 1998 to 2008. SDI was third in total return to investors and third in profit increase from 2007 to 2008 (17 percent).
