OmniSource Corporation is one the nation’s top metals recycling companies, trading and processing a wide range of ferrous and nonferrous metals. OmniSource operates primarily in the upper Midwest and in the Southeastern U.S. It operates eleven automotive shredders and over 70 scrap collection and processing facilities in these regions.
Founded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, in the 1940s, the company grew its Midwest footprint through both organic growth and by acquisitions prior to being acquired by Steel Dynamics in October 2007. Subsequently, Steel Dynamics completed the purchase of Recycle South, a group of metals recycling businesses in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia. OmniSource had earlier purchased 25 percent of this business, now known as OmniSource Southeast.
OmniSource sells ferrous scrap to steel mills and foundries, including sales to SDI steel mills. Typically, half of the scrap consumed by SDI is provided by OmniSource, and half of OmniSource’s ferrous scrap sales are to SDI’s mills. OmniSource processes or trades all grades of ferrous scrap.
OmniSource also manages a sophisticated and extensive logistics network supporting the scrap business, including truck, rail, and barge operations.
