Roanoke Bar Division
The Steel Dynamics Roanoke Bar Division produces a broad range of standard carbon-steel merchant bar products—angles, channels, rounds, flats, and rebar. Its large warehouse outside the Roanoke, Virginia, mill stocks a wide selection of bar products in standard lengths and serves a wide range of customers primarily in the mid-Atlantic region. Although the mill is one of the oldest steel mini mills in the U.S., it has been updated and is highly productive.
The Roanoke Bar Division is the principal operating unit of the Roanoke Electric Steel Corporation, which was acquired by Steel Dynamics in mid-2006. Since becoming a part of Steel Dynamics, the Roanoke operation has enjoyed continued success. Already a well-respected regional supplier of merchant bars, as a part of SDI the mill has improved its productivity after adopting SDI’s operating culture. This includes enhanced work schedules and an employee compensation philosophy highly weighted toward variable incentive pay and rewarding teamwork.
The melting and casting capacity of the Roanoke mill exceeds its capacity to roll finished products. As a result, in addition to merchant bars the mill’s output includes semi-finished steel that is supplied to both external customers and to a sister operation, Steel of West Virginia.
