First and foremost

Nothing is more important to us than the health and welfare of our employees. We’re relentless in our pursuit of the highest safety standards and measures through continuous safety training. Our safety professionals teach our employees to be safety leaders in their own right, responsible not only for their own safety, but for the safety of their co-workers, as well.

The processes we employ to make steel are designed with safety in mind. We provide our employees with the best personal-protective equipment available for every task. Moreover, our philosophy of safety extends beyond the workplace. We believe that safe behavior is actually a lifestyle, that safety should be uppermost in the minds of everyone: at work or at play, on the road or at home.

In 2008, the Flat Roll Group Butler Division became the first steelmaking facility in Indiana—and just the fourth steel producer in the United States—to earn Merit status in the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Programs (VPP).

Being the first steelmakers in Indiana to achieve Merit status was especially significant for us. Nearly a quarter of the steel produced in the United States is made in Indiana, where approximately 23,000 people are employed in the industry. And the credit for this achievement is broadly shared. In the Butler Division—and this is true of SDI at large—safety really is everyone’s job.
